Held annually on the banks of the Waikato River in Ngaaruawaahia, the Turangawaewae Regatta is a celebration of Maori culture and heritage, featuring waka ama racing, the grand parade of Waka Taua, Kapa Haka performances, market stalls and traditional kai.
This year’s event ran across two days with the Kopapa (Kids Regatta) on the 20th of March and the main regatta on Saturday the 21st, which our Steel & Tube team took part in.
Steve Johnson, Account Manager Roofing Waikato, led Steel & Tube's team of 12 including CEO, Mark Malpass, P&C General Manager, Anna Morris, and Roll Forming General Manager, Peter Reiber.
With a few new additions in the mix, paddlers from Perry Metal Protection and Waikato Sand Blasting joined the crew, bringing everyone together on the awa (river) as one for the first time since coming together last year. While we didn’t podium, it was a great day all round and a strong effort from the whole crew.
Hear from our own Steve Johnson, who was present at the Kopapa where S&T prize packs were handed out to the tamariki (kids), sharing what the day was like:
“The schools and teachers really appreciate what we did - you can see it in the tamariki. They just love receiving the packs, and the feedback has been awesome. The bags are practical and get used for everything - sports gear, wet clothes, swimming togs.” Steve said.
A big thank you to everyone involved in making the day happen, from the organisers and volunteers to all the teams and our very own Steel & Tube support crew.
