Meet Courtney, a Despatcher who found a passion for driving business process excellence. She has recently moved into the role of Continuous Improvement Specialist. Here, Courtney reflects on her career to date and gives her advice to others looking to take on a new challenge in the building supplies industry.

Congratulations on starting your new role. Tell me about the transition

I’m currently in the process of transitioning from Despatcher to my new role as Continuous Improvement Specialist. I’m enjoying the transition as one of my first projects as Continuous Improvement Specialist is to develop an operations manual to assist in training the person taking over my Despatcher role.

So far, the transition has been gradual and smooth. In addition to training our new staff member, I’ve been given a few projects to sink my teeth into. I’m really enjoying setting up the new role as well as meeting new people within Steel & Tube. It’s an exciting and a little bit nerve racking, but I am certainly up for the challenge!

In your career to date, what are you most proud of?

I am most proud of how I have been able to help my colleagues in their day-to-day jobs by learning better ways of doing things in our system and then sharing this idea with them. If I can help make someone’s life easier, than that is a win for me. It’s really satisfying to know that people will come to me for help because they know I’ll be there with a smile.

What is your advice to others wanting to take on a new challenge in the building materials industry?

My advice is to always be ready to listen, learn and understand someone’s needs. From there, you can best work out how to deliver. The building industry is filled with so many exciting projects, our customers are working on some really fascinating things, and it’s great to be a part of that. Steel & Tube offers such a vast range of products that span multiple stages of a building project. I feel such an immense sense of pride when I spot buildings that contain our products.

Describe your ideal New Zealand summer

My ideal New Zealand summer is filled with friends, family and adventure. I love to go camping, hiking and be in any body of water as much as possible. The more sun and water the better! I also love a good BBQ to wind down after a day out and about.
