Steel & Tube has kicked off a funding initiative to ensure more local school children can take part in educational activities at Hutt City’s Dowse and Petone Settlers museums.

Transportation costs for the city’s lower decile school s are often beyond the means of many parents, which means every year hundreds of children have to forego the opportunities to open to them as part of the museums’ learning outside the classroom sessions.

Now a $2000 Steel & Tube donation has set the wheels in motion to help fund free school bus trips to the museums.

Chief Executive Dave Taylor says it is a great way for Steel & Tube to support the community.  “Our company is driven by innovation, opportunity and future thinking.   At a community level, we support opportunities that encourage today’s learners to think creatively and engage with new ideas.

“Art galleries and museums are great places to enable this thinking.”

As the father of two pre-school children, and a resident of Lower Hutt, Mr Taylor says local residents are fortunate to have these museums on their doorstep.

“Holding their doors open for our kids and their families is something Steel & Tube is proud to be a part of.”

Museums’ Director Courtney Johnston says:  “The Dowse and Settlers museums have inspiring exhibitions, a nationally significant art and craft collection and beautiful buildings.

“We’ve seen time and again that once kids have the chance to get through the doors, we become an important and lasting part of their lives.  These are their museums, and we want them to take pride in owning them.”
