Steel and Tube has celebrated the opening of its Blenheim Rd property in Christchurch, representing a key stage in a major renewal programme for the company in the Canterbury region.

More than 60 staff will work from the 2.4 hectare property, which has undergone a significant refurbishment and upgrade, including seismic strengthening to meet new building standards.

Two facilities have now been consolidated onto the one site, creating a new distribution hub and forming an essential part of Steel & Tube’s South Island distribution network.

The company also recently opened a processing hub at in Seymour St in Hornby.

The opening was officiated by Member of Parliament for Wigram, the Hon. Dr Megan Woods, alongside Steel & Tube chair, Susan Paterson.

In her remarks, Susan said: “Steel is the material of choice for construction in Christchurch post the earthquakes and Steel & Tube is playing a vital role in the redevelopment of the Canterbury region.

“From the Justice Precinct on Tuam St to the Christchurch Hospital Acute Services building; the world-class new Regional Science and Innovation Centre at the University of Canterbury; and the redevelopment of Burwood hospital – the largest public hospital building project in New Zealand’s history.

“We are extremely proud to have been a part of these projects, and of doing our bit to support Canterbury’s economic growth and development.”

CEO Mark Malpass said: “This development, and our other builds around the country, are all about becoming more involved with our customers, throughout the customer life cycle. We can now offer a one stop shop to our Christchurch customers, advising them at the ground floor of a project and delivering the best products to meet their steel needs.”
