When Auckland construction company Jalcon Homes built a series of Cape Cod-style family homes on 'The Brae' they chose COLORSTEEL® MAXX® for the roofing and cladding.

The Brae at Pine Harbour is situated on Auckland’s eastern seaboard. The proximity to the coastline meant COLORSTEEL® MAXX® was the natural choice. It can withstand harsh coastal environments. It also offered a colour range which accommodated the 'Cape Cod' design concept.

Cape Cod homes have their origins in 17th Century America. New England colonists built their homes in the traditional English style. They were designed to withstand the harsh winters and vicious Atlantic storms. They also made the most of limited sunshine.

The typical Cape Cod cottage was steep-roofed. It was clad in unpainted cedar shake shingles that weathered over time from a warm tan to a silvery grey. The very same shades of grey incorporated in the COLORSTEEL® colour range.

Inside, the early Cape Cod houses were sparse and simple. They had pine furnishings and floors, their wide planks were often painted in pumpkin orange. Warmth from the kitchen stove lay at the heart of this practical design.

The Brae’s more sophisticated version also features cedar and pine, but the traditional cedar shingles have been replaced with COLORSTEEL® MAXX® pre-painted steel.

The facades and roofing are finished in Smokey and Thunder Grey. They're interspersed with wood finished in paint or stain, referencing the original homes. The vibrant splashes of burnt orange hint at the warm tan of fresh cedar.
