“Even though it’s work, it’s a lot of fun too”, says Jason Lemoto, Distribution Manager – Nelson. Having joined Team Steel & Tube in late 2014, Jason has moved through a variety of roles and locations. From his time as a Stainless Branch Manager in Mt Manganui through to his product managing days in Christchurch to his current role in which he’s focused on the Tasman and Marlborough areas, Jason is an asset to Steel & Tube who has grown with our business.
When I first visited Nelson a few years back, the city has a youthful energy. I felt that the city was evolving and modernising which is exciting to be a part of. While the Marlborough Tasman has a depth of history, a tangible energy is coming from the development of new projects throughout the regions. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?
It’s a wonderful place, a beautiful setting, and a welcoming region in which I can raise my children. So, it was an easy decision to apply for the role.
There are some real characters in our business and every day, I relish the opportunity to learn something from them or develop their skills through providing learning opportunities. It’s almost like we’re a family which makes the workplace a lot of fun.
As a business, we are solving a variety of complex challenges for our customers. When my team and I are working together to solve these challenges, I am learning more about the local industries, customers, projects, and people.
With where I’m at right now I would describe Steel & Tube as a community, rather than a company. We have our challenges; however, we always push through together. This is what makes us such a strong team. In working together each day, we come to know each other on a more personal level which allows us to be there for each other and offer support in a variety of situations.
When I was getting near the end of my time at school, one of my teachers was talking about what comes next, she said: “You don’t need a degree to enjoy your working life, you can just find something you enjoy doing and get paid for it. That way you’ll never have to work a day in your life”.
I know now that this has been said by others and phrased in many ways. Nonetheless, it resonates with me in terms of work-life balance which has become increasingly important as I get older.
I’m very interested in geology, so I often collect rocks when I’m out exploring. So many rocks, so little time! When I was living back into Tauranga, I would spend my time socialising with family and school friends. Since moving to Nelson, I’m more focused on my kids as they settle into a new city.
I’ve also been thinking about getting a small sailing catamaran so I can sneak away to the Abel Tasman for the weekend on occasion. However, my friends are keen fishermen so I’ll never live it down if I get a boat without an engine!
