Steel & Tube are pleased to announce that our Group Sustainability Manager, Trent Brash is now a Green Star Practitioner.
Green Star is a certification for new buildings run by the New Zealand Green Building Council. A rating of up to 6 stars is awarded to buildings based on their environmental credentials and the overall impact of the project’s design and construction. Green Star ratings reward commercial projects of all types that promote lower-carbon, healthy, sustainable developments.
Becoming a Green Star Practitioner recognises a commitment to green building practice and knowledge leadership in this area. It also provides a pathway to becoming a Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP) which allows individuals to act as core members of a Green Star project team and to make high-quality submissions.
Under the Government’s new Carbon Neutral Government Programme (CNGP), from 1 April 2022, the Government has mandated that all new projects >$25,000,000 must be designed and built to a minimum 5-star Green Star Design & As Built NZ. From 1 April 2023, this threshold reduces to >$9,000,000. As a result, understanding Green Star requirements is becoming more pertinent as the construction industry aims to develop a sustainable future.
Reflecting on the experience, Trent says: “The Green Star Practitioner training has equipped me with the tools to handle a variety of Green Star related queries, including how project teams can achieve maximum points related to steel products, and how that fits into the overall Green Star process. For customers that are working towards a Green Star rating, I can give timely guidance or data to help them achieve their goals”.
